Emplacement et contexte
The former Makro site on Bergensesteenweg in Sint-Pieters-Leeuw is getting a new future. The approximately 8.5-hectare site will be redeveloped into a mixed environment for working, shopping, and recreation.
Accessibilité
The site is located on Bergensesteenweg, an important arterial road towards Brussels. The future vision also provides more space for pedestrians and cyclists. A park and pond on the Detréstraat side should form a natural connection between the site and its surroundings.
Concept
The master plan combines offices and public functions with local businesses, shops, and leisure activities. A contiguous park forms an important part of the future design. The ambition is a versatile employment site that also holds meaning for visitors and local residents.
Durabilité
De-paving and greening are central to the future plans. The current highly paved environment must make way for a design with more greenery and space for water. A contiguous park connects the green zones and offers space for meeting and relaxation.
Statut de développement
The master plan was presented in September 2025. In 2026, the municipality initiated the formal procedure for the Makro Spatial Implementation Plan, with a preliminary note, process note, and public consultation. Meanwhile, the temporary re-occupancy is partially operational, with Jumbo since June 2026. Early 2027, Colos will also open its second store here.
