Vondel District

The former Makro site on Woluwelaan in Machelen will have a new future under the name Vondel District. The location will be gradually redeveloped with economic activities. The name refers to the Vondelgracht, which is to be reopened within the future redevelopment.

The site is located on Woluwelaan, near the Brussels Ring Road and Brussels Airport. This location connects the site to the Brussels periphery and the wider region. The future vision focuses on mobility and improved traffic flow.

Vondel District is being developed as a mixed economic site with space for retail, leisure activities, and SMEs. The approach is phased: existing buildings will first be temporarily occupied, while plans for definitive redevelopment are further shaped. This ensures activity returns during the preparatory phase.

More space for greenery and water is an important starting point. The plans include de-paving, the re-opening of the Vondelgracht, and opportunities for water retention, permeable paving, and green roofs. Additionally, local energy production and aligning the energy needs of different users are being explored. These measures are among the ambitions for the definitive development.

The temporary re-occupation is operational. On July 16, 2026, Delhaize and COLOS opened their doors as part of Vondel District. The definitive redevelopment will follow at a later stage and remains subject to further planning and permits.
